Surprising best.

When I Googled “Most popular video on YouTube”, I was expecting to discover some drummer captured in a weird set up, like Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe soloing upside down here or some incredible performance by someone recognized as the best drummer of all time (here), or some really weird theatrics like this one here or this one here. What I wasn’t prepared for was to see a huge basketball player playing in a very musical and professional way a complicated yet sensitive song. I revised my expectations: the internet has taste and discernment. The way this guy is playing is not crazy at all. He is calculated and deliberate yet he delivers a very emotional drum part that fit the music perfectly.

Let me end the suspense and give you a link to this superb video here. Apparently, the fact that it’s almost twelve minutes long doesn’t deter hinder its success. I understand why. He is mesmerizing. He has an incredible control over his unusual kit (His set up is peppered with melodic surfaces), he carries the drum part one note at a time with utmost precision. He is passionate and accurate. Every hit is as clear as crystal. Down to my toes, I was impressed.

On a side note, at the time this guy is playing he was exactly the age I am today: 58 years old. Yet he plays with stamina a hard rock drum part. His arms are the size of my thighs and his legs the size of my fridge. Good for him. I’ve got to got to the gym.
