The power of imagination.

Are we losing our imagination? I think the question is valid since we are spending a lot of our time on our phone. The digital world is a wonderful one but populated with only of other people’s thoughts, not our own. We have become eternal spectators of the prowess of others. And the unfortunate consequence is that we don’t spend some time imagining.

What it there to imagine? you might ask. After all we have everything we could ever need showing up on our little screen. Ah, that question, that very question “What is there to imagine?” might very well be the most powerful one you will ever conceive. Let me take you through it.

There is a book out there called “The secret”. It explains how the powerful people (I didn’t say rich) gain their power. They envision it. Before one becomes a captain of industry, that person had created a world in his/her mind to mimic the sights, sounds, smells, feel of that creation. Famously, Jim Carrey, the great actor had spent many of his young years having sessions where, sitting down with his eyes closed, he would visualize what a million dollars would look like, feel like, smell like. A dream he eventually accomplished when he negotiated his contract for the movie “Dumb and dumber”. He was around 30 years old.

The power of imagination is almost limitless. I’ll tell you my own story about it. Before I became a professional musician, I had wanted it so badly that I almost brought the situation to life with my mind. I can now say with accuracy that I am living my dream.

Now let’s get practical. When do you get to spend time imagining what you want? Answer: when you’re bored. But we are never bored, remember? We each have our little antidote in our pocket, the one that keeps our mind hunting for distraction.

Now come with me. You’ll close your eyes, you’ll think of what you want. Take your time creating all the details. You’ll see the broad shape of it as well as the little innerworkings. Now, go touch it. Feel the grain, the texture. Examine all the different aspects of the projects, live with it. Your imagination is a powerful tool, it will supply all you need. Now, open your eyes and go get it, pick up the phone and call me, I’ll make you a drummer or a piano player. That was your dream, right?
